 Description

Google Docs is a user-friendly and simple platform to navigate, especially if you have ever used other word processing tools such as Microsoft Word. While free, Docs does not skimp on features and there are no locked features. Docs (and other programs in Google's G Suite) can be accessed through any web browser or the free apps can be downloaded onto a mobile phone or tablet.

With Google Docs, you can create and edit text documents right in your web browser. Even better, multiple people can work at the same time, you can see people's changes as they make them, and every change is saved automatically.

 How it works

  • Create new documents, use Google Docs templates, share documents with your team and collaborate in real-time.

  • To make a new Google Doc, first head to docs.google.com and sign in with your Google account. Once you're on the Google Docs start page, you can create a blank new document or choose a template.

  • You can also go to File > New > Document or File > New > From template to do the same from within an existing Google Doc.

 Features
  • Group projects can be recorded in one document to encourage teamwork and creativity
  • Keep track of grades, attendance, or any other data with an always-available spreadsheet.
  • Encourage students to write in a shared document. You can view their work at any time, provide feedback, and learn about each student's strengths
  • Encourage students to collaborate on a presentation and then present it to the class
  • Collaborate on a document with colleagues to track the progress of your students

 Affordances
  • Real time editing
  • Co-create of knowledge
  • Collaborative & cooperative Learning
  • Communication tools - chat (synchronous), comment (asynchronous)
  • Use of revision history to track individual students' contributions

 Limitations
  • Only 30 people can edit a document at the same time. Additional users will still be able to view the document, but they won't be able to edit it
  • A single document can only be shared with 200 email addresses including viewers, commenters, and editors (doesn't apply to public items)
