 Description

Kialo is designed to facilitate structured online discussions and debates. It provides a visual, tree-like structure for organising arguments and counterarguments, making it easier for students to engage in critical thinking and complex reasoning. Kialo helps educators create an inclusive environment for class discussions, where all students can participate simultaneously and at their own pace.

 Features
  • Visual mapping of discussion themes
  • Real time collaboration
  • Discussion templates

 Affordances
  • Visual Argument Mapping: Kialo presents discussions in a hierarchical, branching structure that clearly shows how ideas relate to each other
  • Grading and Feedback Tools: Teachers can easily assess student contributions, provide feedback, and assign grades within the platform
  • Integration with Learning Management Systems: Kialo supports integration with popular LMS platforms like Moodle, Canvas, and Blackboard
  • Real-Time Collaboration: Multiple students can add to the discussion simultaneously, increasing engagement and participation

 Educator Usage

Substitution - Instead of verbal exchanges or paper submissions, teachers can use this platform for their students to students articulate their arguments in the digital format provided by Kialo.

Augmentation - The platform's anonymous mode and simultaneous participation features significantly modify how debates are conducted. Teachers can prompt students to contribute reflective and argumentative posts outside of class time, giving them more opportunities to research and reflect on their arguments.

Modification - Kialo provides an opportunity to logically develop points from a central thesis. Teachers can encourage students to map out their arguments using these features and also make use of Kialo's pro/con format prompts for students to consider counterarguments at every step while planning their essay. Teachers can prompt the students to submit the visual maps and for feedback.

Redefinition - For each discussion, teachers can specify which tasks students should complete. The tasks include setting clear tasks, writing claims, citing sources, writing counterclaims, vote others' claims and more. Teachers can track these tasks in Kialo to assess how engaged the learners are.
