It allows you to set up a classroom that gives everyone in it his/her own whiteboard to work on. It’s very easy on the student end to use. As the teacher, you see all the responses in real time. It works on all devices and is especially useful with a touchscreen. It also allows you to view all of your student's virtual whiteboards simultaneously so you can check on their progress with a written problem and make gentle course corrections to steer them in the right direction before they get too far off track.
How it works1. When you go to the website, you are met with the option to either start a new class or join a class. Teachers will select “New Class.”
2. Then give your class a name and click “Create class.” You will automatically receive a URL that you can provide to students so they can join your class. The teacher could also provide the code in the top corner of the screen to have students join.
3. When students join, they enter their name. This is the only way they can identify themselves in the activity. On the student’s end, students can see their teacher’s whiteboard and can toggle to the other tab to see their own.
4. The teacher and students can work within their own whiteboards, using the tools on the side to support their work. The students can toggle back to their teacher’s whiteboard to see the work they are doing and the teacher can toggle to the “my class” tab to see all of their students’ boards in one location.
5. If a teacher clicks on the individual student whiteboard, they can see a full-screen version of the student’s work and can write on the board themselves. They also have options, including:
- - Kick: removes the person from the activity immediately
- - Erase: clears the whiteboard
- - Push: pushes the teacher’s whiteboard to that individual student
Features- Instant Access - Setting up a new class whiteboard is lightning fast! No registration or logins needed!
- Device Independent - Works on any device - no installation or downloads needed.
- Versatile Tools - Insert images, backgrounds, arrows, shapes and texts! There are many different, versatile tools available.
- Math - Insert math symbols, expressions or equations easily using the math editor, where you can type using a graphical interface or insert LaTeX code.
- Access Control - You have full control of who enters your room by using the waiting lobby. There is also an option to lock your room after your class has started, preventing new users from joining.
Affordances- Allow students to write comments and questions in whiteboard, supports increased interaction.
- Ask a question, and let the whole class answer by using Whiteboard.fi.
- Save all your student whiteboards as a PDF file
- Easily letting students join in by using QR codes.
Limitations- There is no custom room URLs yet.
- No feedback to student whiteboards yet.
- No way to know who is actually logged in, students type their own name. If the code is shared, anyone can get in and draw.
Educator UsageSubstitution - Whiteboard.fi can replace traditional paper-based whiteboards or chalkboards. Instead of writing on a physical board, teachers can present lessons digitally.
Augmentation - Teachers can create interactive activities where students demonstrate their understanding visually on their boards. As students work on their individual boards, teachers can monitor progress instantly and provide immediate support or clarification.
Modification - Teachers can encourage students to use whiteboard.fi to record their understanding in a visual manner (e.g. mind maps, fish-bone diagrams). This can be used as a digital portfolio.
Redefinition - Teachers can share with students a problem or a brainstorming task and then ask them to work individually or in small groups using their whiteboards and markers to show thinking. For students, this is a way to easily share their ideation, problem-solving strategies, and mastery of key skills and content.
